The Last Warbler is a fictional story set in the late 1970s about two avid birders who travel to the South Carolina Lowcountry. They are chasing a possibility most ornithologists have nearly given up on: that Bachman’s Warbler, one of North America’s rarest birds, may still survive in the swamps.
What begins as an improbable birding quest turns darker as scattered sightings, an unfinished investigation, and signs of logging in the wrong places suggest that the fate of the warbler may be tied to something no one wants examined too closely.
Set against the South Carolina swamps at the dawn of modern endangered-species law, The Last Warbler is a suspense novel about extinction, evidence, and how much can depend on a bird almost no one believes is still there.
